John Underwood

great great great granddaughter
John Underwood b. 1805 probably in Brown Co.,
Ohio area. He was said to have lived in the area of Cincinnati, OH as a child.
He moved his family to Greensburg, Decatur Co., IN around 1837, where several of
his children were born. By 1850 he moved to Eddyville, Mahaska Co., Iowa were he
lived till his death in 1890.
Lovica Gregg/Greggs was b. 1809 in Ohio, married John Underwood abt. 1824-1831. This may have
been a second marriage for John. Lovica died
in Mahaska Co., Iowa in 1852. Both are buried in the Crain Cemetery.
Mary Mahill Secrest b. 1821 in KY and John
Underwood were married in 1862 in Mahaska Co., Iowa. After his death, she
went west where her son had found her first husband Michael
Secrest in Idaho.
John's second known wife was Phebe (Decker Newman?) Mayer b. 1811 in Virg. and moved as a child or
young woman to Lanesville Harrison Co., IN where she possibly married a Mr.
Newman, then Nicholas Mayer a recent
emigrant from France and her deceased sister Emaly's
husband in 1837.
After 1850 and Nicholas's death Phebe moved her
family to Mahaska Co., Iowa where she married John
Underwood in 1853. Phebe died in 1860 and is buried at Crain Cemetery
also.
