Velma Ralston Skelley

Velma Ralston Skelley was born June 11, 1914 in
Evanwood, Tucker County, WV. Velma died Feb 8, 1983 in Cumberland, Allegany
County, MD. She was the daughter of Elby Samuel Ralston
and Carrie Elisabeth Jones. Her siblings were Helen,
Paul, Jean, and Joanna Genevieve.
Velma married Gilmore
Sweitzer, and then Joseph Skelley, Sr. Velma
married Gilmore at the age of 13, then Joseph at the age of 19.
She operated the sales and bookkeeping for Skelley's Appliance and Parts
Company of Cumberland, MD. She was renowned for her culinary skills, especially
her bread baking. Velma held her first job at the age of 9 years old. She had a
route, in which she would go to different houses and make the bread. She
would get it to the 2nd stage of rising, and then go on to the next house. Often
she would get paid in trade, and she helped many a housewife.
