Newspaper clipping: Local Boy on Last Lap of 16 Years Navy Service
Victor Bishop Wollam, son of Melvin P. Wollam, arrived in Berrien Springs,
Michigan Saturday for a visit at the home of his grandmother, Mrs. J.C. Wollam
and other relatives. He was a former local boy, leaving here in 1900 and since
1908 has been in the Navy, enlisting as an apprentice but is now a commissioned
officer. He had three honorable discharges but when his present term expires,
which will complete 16 years service, he announces that he will retire and with
his wife go to Florida to live with his father in Florida who is in the orange
and store business. The sailor's marriage was rather romantic, meeting a girl
one day and marrying her the next. He is now stationed on one of the Ford Eagle
boats at Detroit. Victor sustained a broken shoulder, hip and ankle while in
service. He helped in sinking a submarine during the war. The Wollam families
are well known in Berrien Springs and Benton Harbor.
Written by Victor, his diary.
Enlisted in the Navy Nov. 8th 1908, left Birmingham, Al. on Seaboard Line.
Arrived in Norfolk, Va. on the morning of the 10th. He was 17 years old. He
listed all the books he read, how much money was sent home and what others owed
him plus what he purchased.
