Information from
Ronald DeGroff,
Rochester, NY, grandson of Aaron DeGroff:
Aaron DeGroff was my grandfather (born 8 June, 1869, died 5 Nov, 1936).
Maureen Lee, the submitter of the photo, is a 3rd cousin to me through Aaron's
wife's (my grandmother's) family.
Aaron's blacksmith shop was located on Pennsylvania side of the NY/PA state line
that runs through Ceres, NY, just at the southwest end of the bridge over Oswayo
creek. The date of the Auction on the notice posted on the wall indicates that
the photo was taken in the summer of 1911.
The man seated at the right of the photo was Aaron's brother-in-law, Frederick D. Perkins, from nearby Eldred, PA, also
a blacksmith. The boy next to him was likely Fred's son,
Walter D. Perkins. The boy standing in the doorway may have been Aaron's
son, Frank (my uncle) who was about the same age as
Walter.
