Free Methodist Church PleasantvilleFree Methodist Church, Pleasantville, Venango County, built 1847-1848. The church was dedicated 6 Jan 1849 as the Allegheny Baptist Church. Aaron Benedict was a zealous adherent of the Allegheny Baptist Church and he started the organization of a society at Pleasantville. He and his wife, along with John Tennent and wife, Mrs. David Copeland, Mrs. Ira B. West, were the first members of the church. Rev. Blake was the first minister, and Rev. E. M. Miles was among his early succors. Rev. Samuel Miles served the church from 1838-1842. Rev. John Hicks from Dec 1842 - Jul 1848. Rev. George Spratt from Jul 1849 - Aug 1855, Rev. Wilcox from Apr 1854 - Feb 1856, Rev. W. B. Bingham from Apr 1857 - Apr 1860; Rev. Joel Green from May 1860 - Apr 1862. Revs. Haskel, Willoughby, Davis, Hurlburt, Brasted, Trowbridge and Pierce also pastored the church for a brief period of time. Rev. Pierce retired 7 Nov 1875. The congregation continued without a regular pastor until about 1880. The building was subsequently occupied by the Free Methodist Church. Historic American Building Survey, No. Pa-531 |
