Jacob Reid Armagost

Submitted by Dr. Harry Isaac Sharp, Jr.

Jacob Reid Armagost was born 21 Aug 1860 in Troy Township, the son of Rev. Isaac C. and Elizabeth Stalman Armagost. He was reared in both Troy and Plum Townships.  Reid joined the Plum and Troy Baptist Church on 21 Apr 1877.

He attended Clark's Business College in Titusville in 1882, and on 18 Sept 1882, he and his young nephew Frank H. Morse were in their buggy when it was struck by lightning, stunning them.

On 8 Jan 1891, Reid was married in Meadville to Hattie Isabelle Smith, a young dressmaker, then 21.  Reid was a driller at the time, and they lived their first three years at Kane where he was in oil field work.  Then they moved to Venango, Crawford County, where he followed the mercantile business the remainder of his life.  He and Hattie had three children, Leo A., Thelma E., and Iona M. Armagost.

Reid died at his residence in Venango late in the afternoon on 30 Jul 1918, from neuralgia of heart which attacked him three weeks earlier.  The funeral was held in his home on 2 Aug 1918 with burial in Venango Cemetery.  He was a member of Venango Lodge 298, Knights of Pythias, which attended the funeral as a group.
