Jane Rankin Mortimer was born on 9 Feb 1805 in Toby Twp., Armstrong County, PA, to Benjamin and Lettice Johnston Rankin.  She was the elder sister of Benjamin McClellan "Squire" Rankin.

She married Jonathan S. Mortimer (born about 1796) about 1822.  Some time between 1840 and 1850, Jonathan S. and Jane Rankin Mortimer moved to Fairview, Butler County, PA, where they raised nine children: Benjamin R., Rachel, Mary M., Nancy, Lettice, Margaret M., Rebecca, Samuel Wallace and Jonathan Addison.

Jonathan S. Mortimer died on 11 Mar 1864 in Fairview Twp., Butler Co. and is buried there in Bear Creek Cemetery.  Their oldest son Benjamin R. Mortimer died in the Civil War the following month, on 20 Apr 1864, in Plymouth, North Carolina.  Jane then moved to Madison Twp, Clarion County where she lived with her son, Samuel Wallace Mortimer, his wife, Laura Rankin Mortimer and their children until her death.  Her daughter Nancy Mortimer McGee, wife of James L. McGee, died on 21 Aug 1874 in East Brady Twp., Clarion County.

Jane Rankin Mortimer died in Madison Twp. on 5 Jan 1888 and is buried in the Seceder Cemetery in Rimersburg near her brother Benjamin McClellan Rankin and many of her other Rankin relatives.
