Jennie Anderson Laughlin

Mrs. Jennie Anderson Laughlin, whose father and grandfather were elders of Scrubgrass, and whose brother is now an elder, was the first unmarried woman of the Presbyterian Missions, perhaps of any mission, in North China, to brave the hardships and opprobrium of country work.

Miss Anderson gave her life to Christ and the church at 14 years of age; and no Christian can read her life and meditate upon what site has accomplished without thanking God for that grand, that noble, that Christ-like character.

She was born in Allegheny township, Butler County, Pa., August 7, 1853, educated at Glade Run Academy, Pa., and Ames College, Ia.; sailed for Chefoo, China, August, 1878; married Rev. J. H. Laughlin, of Wei Hien, August 17, 1886, aided her husband in opening a station in the great city of Chiningchow, 1892, and on May 3, 1899, this noble woman passed to her reward.
