John and Polly Emma Shiry Young

Submitted by Clarence R. Shirey, great great nephew. Permission granted for use on this site only.  Reproduced in Parentage & Descandants of John Shiry, Sr. & Mary “Polly” (Shaffer) of Redbank Twp., Armstrong Co., PA, 1974, Vol. 5.

John Young, b. 1830, died 1917.

Baptized as Anna Maria Shiry, but called "Polly Emma" born 1839 or 1840, died in 1921. She was the daughter of John Shiry, Sr. and Mary "Polly" Shaffer Shiry. She would have been born in Redbank twp., Armstrong County, but lived in Redbank Twp., Clarion Co., PA.

John and Polly Emma were married in Feb. 1860, and lived in Maysville. The house they lived in was completely destroyed in the 30 May 1860 tornado. John was at home when it hit. Polly Emma had gone to visit her folks at the top of the hill along present day 536 when the storm hit. The village was completely leveled. It was later rebuilt and then called New Maysville. But due to confusion in mail with other places by same names it later became Mayport, PA.

The home in the photograph no longer stands.  It would have been just off to the left of present day Dairy Road .

Both John and Polly Emma Young are buried at Zion Union Cemetery, Shannondale, PA. Clarion County.
