John Purdy was the son of
Farmer Purdy and Esther Richmond of Frankfort Springs, Hanover Twp. John
was born in Allegheny County in 1833, and raised on his parents farm in
Hanover Twp. He served with Company H, 140th Regiment, Pennsylvania
Volunteers during the Civil War. He saw action in many battles and
was twice wounded; at Gettysburg and Spottsylvania.
He married Hannah Christy in 1868. They
first made their home in Brighton Twp., and later in the village of New
Sheffield, Hopewell Twp., where he died in 1926. John
and Hannah Purdy were the parents of two sons: William
H., born 1870, died 1904, and Alvar C., born
1873, died 1954.
