Nicholas Pahel Family

Submitted by Michael Pahel-Wayne, daughter of Milford Pahel

Nicholas Pahel family of Derry, Westmoreland Co., taken probably in September 1934 on their back porch, 617 E First Ave., Derry. Some of the unknowns may be siblings of Nicholas Pahel or his wife, Mary Brown Pahel.

Nicholas was born 10 Sept  1858 in Kelly Station, Indiana Co, the son of David and Susan Hysong Pahel. David was killed at Spottsylvania, May 10, 1864. Susan remarried a few years to John Gibson and had several more children. Nicholas worked on the Pennsylvania RR as a conductor and retired in about 1927 with 45 years service. He died in 1939.

Mary was born in May, 1865, in the Derry area, a twin to Joseph; children of James M. and Sarah Brown. She died in 1940. Nicholas and Mary were married in December 1880 and lived in Derry all their lives.

Back row, left to right,  1st three are unknowns; Nicholas Pahel; behind him, his son, Ralph; then son Charlie; son Milford; two children & younger man - unknowns

4th row: both women are unknowns; man in middle, John G Pahel, son of Nicholas

3rd row: Burnice Fulton Pahel wife of Ralph; Vernon M. Pahel, son of Nicholas; unknown older man

2nd row: Harry Pahel, son of Nicholas

Front row: Mary Lou Pahel (young girl), daughter of Ralph & Burnice; Amelia "Millie" Kuhn Pahel, wife of Harry; child on Millie's lap, unknown; Alice Yockey Pahel, wife of James; and, finally, James L. Pahel, another son of Nicholas.

All of their sons worked for the railroad. Most for the Pennsylvania; but Vernon, James & Milford eventually moved to Coraopolis,  Allegheny Co, working for the Montour RR as conductors. Vernon was killed there in October 1934; Milford & James eventually retired from that company (1969 & 1965, respectively). A brother Frank was killed in the Derry yard in 1900 and, another brother, William, died in 1920, of injuries from a railroad accident that had occurred several years previous.
