Rebecca Kiffer
Prather
Submitted by Linda
Rogers Dill, great great granddaughter
Rebecca Kiffer, the daughter of Frederick
and Eliza Ann Knisley Kiffer. This photo was taken in 1872, probably for
her wedding.
Rebecca was born 26 Mar 1852, and died 11 Aug 1938 in Le Boeuf township, Erie
County. On 15 May 1872, she married Henry Durand
"Sandy" Prather, a native of Forest County. They moved to Le
Boeuf township, where they raised six children:
-
Cressie
Almira Prather (1876-1959), married first to Ira
Dwayne Larkins, second to Joseph Burton Henry,
and third to Oel M. King. Three children. She
is buried in Mill Village cemetery.
-
Henry
Eugene "Gene" Prather (1878-1956), married in 1900 to Jessie
Shreve (1882-1934), daughter of Joseph and Mary
Abigail (Sabin) Shreve. One son. Buried in Evergreen cemetery, Union
City.
-
Wales
Ashton Prather (1883-1980), married in 1911 to Ethel
Harriet Auer (1891-1981), daughter of Gustave
and DeEtta Auer. Six children. Buried in Evergreen cemetery, Union
City.
-
Essie Leota
Prather (1888-1914), married in 1906 to Emmett
Louis Powers (abt 1888-1918), son of Marsh
Powers of Massachusetts. Three children. Buried in Evergreen
cemetery, Union City. Because they both died young, the children were raised
by relatives.
Rebecca and Sandy lived on a farm next to a creek. Every spring the creek would
overflow, and they would use a canoe to get from the house to the barn.
They made up a rhyme to remember the children's names:
Bert, John, and Cressie,
Gene, Wales, and Essie.
