Theopholis
Lewis Bonzo

Theopholis Lewis Bonzo, nicknamed Tuft. He
was the son of Peter Lewis Bonzo and Rebecca Brooks.
According to the Beaver Argus of Oct 22, 1862, he was drafted in North
Sewickley township. He served in Co. 6, 3rd Provost Regiment, Pa. Cavalry,
rose to the rank of sergeant and was busted back for Disobedience, and then rose
back up again. He was at Gettysburg. He was captured Nov 19, 1863 at
Stevensburg-Rapidan and ended up at Andersonville Prison in Georgia, where he
was listed as Sgt. T. L. Bunzo, Co. G, Regiment 18,
Pa. Cavalry. He paid his parole and was released Nov 20, 1864.
Returning to Beaver County, Pa., he married Sylvia
Coleman Boots and they adopted Lucy Ethyl Penberthy.
Tuft and Sylvia were principals involved in the founding and construction
of the Wurtemburg United Methodist Church (still holding services today) near
Ellwood City, Pa. Tuft rests at Presbyterian Cemetery, North Sewickley
township, Beaver County, Pa.
