Affidavit:
State of Pennsylvania. County of Butler, s.s.:
On this 29th day of September, 1896, before me Clerk of U. S. Court in and for said county and state, personally came Mrs. Margaret Faller, a resident of Butler, Butler County, Pa, who being by me duly sworn according to law, deposes and says: My age is 51 years. I am the widow of Augustus H. Faller, late of Butler, Butler County, Pa, dead, who was a Private in Co. "I", 78th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers during the late war, and who was a pensioner of the United States at $8.00 per month, under Pension Certificate No. 884325. The said Augustus H. Faller died in Butler, Pa. on the 27th day of August, 1896, leaving me as his widow, but leaving no child or children under 16 years of age surviving him. I have not remarried since the date of his death, but still remain his widow.

My maiden name was Margaret Albert. I was married to said Augustus H. Faller on the 4th day of July, 1866, by John Greer Esq., at his office in Prospect, Butler County, Pa. There is no church or other Public record of said marriage that I know of, and said Justice of the Peace who married us has left this county for a number of years. I am therefore unable to furnish Church or other record of said marriage or the affidavit of the Justice of the Peace who married us. Neither the said Augustus H. Faller or myself had been married prior to our marriage to each other, and neither of us was ever divorced from the other. We lived together as husband and wife from the time of our marriage, July 4th, 1866, to the date of the death of said Augustus H. Faller, August 27th, 1896. The said Augustus H. Faller was not in the military or naval service of the United States prior to his enlistment as Private in Co. "I", 78th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, February 15th, 1865, or after September 11th, 1865, the date of his discharge from said Co. and regiment. The said Augustus H. Faller last drew his pension to July 4th, 1896. There is therefore Pension due from July 4th, 1896 to August 27th, 1896.

I make this application for the purpose of securing said accrued pension viz. from July 4th, 1896 to August 27th, 1896, and I hereby constitute and appoint George W. Fleeger of Butler, Pa., my attorney to prosecute this claim. My post office address is No. 713 South Main Street, Butler, Butler County, Pa.
[signed] Margaret Faller [witnesses] 1. Philip Crouse 2. Philip J. Spohn

Also at the same time personally appeared Philip Crouse of Butler, Pa., post office address No. 520 Fairview Avenue, Butler, Butler County, PA, and Philip J. Spohn a resident of Summit Township, butler County, Pa., post office address Herman, Butler county, Pa., persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit - who being by me duly sworn according to law, depose and say that, "We were present and saw Mrs. Margaret Faller, the claimant, sign her name to the foregoing application, that we have been for over thirty years acquainted with her and know her to be the identical person she represents herself to be. We were also from boyhood personally acquainted with her late husband, Augustus H. Faller, dead, late private Co. "I", 78th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, and know that said Augustus H. Faller, her said husband, died in Butler, Pa. on the 27th day of August, 1896. And that he left to survive him, his said wife Margaret Faller, but no child or children under 16 years of age. The said Augustus H. Faller and his said wife, Mrs. Margaret Faller, had no children. We remember when said Augustus Faller was married to his said wife, Margaret Faller, her maiden name was Miss Margaret Albert. They were married about 30 years ago. We were not present at their marriage, but we heard of it at the time or soon afterwards, and saw them after that at church and other gatherings where they treated and recognized each other as husband and wife and were so known, treated, and recognized by their relatives, neighbors and friends and the community generally. Neither of them had ever been formerly married prior to their marriage to each other and neither was ever divorced from the other, but they lived together as husband and wife until the death of said Augustus H. Faller which occurred August 27th, 1896.

The said Augustus Faller was not in the military or naval service of the United States prior to February 15th, 1865, when he enlisted in Co. "I", 78th [Regiment], Pennsylvania Volunteers and not after September 11th, 1865, when discharged from said Co. "I", 78th [Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers. This affidavit was written by George W. Fleeger in our presence at his office in Butler, Pa. on the 29th day of September, 1896, from oral statements made by us to him at the time and in making said statements we were not aided or prompted by any written or printed statement or recital prepared or dictated by any other person or persons, but said statements as above written are according to the best of our personal knowledge, recollection and belief. We have no interest in the claim of said Mrs. Margaret Faller for accrued pension. We were both present at the funeral of said Augustus H. Faller, dead.

No. of Claim - 691493. I own no real estate of any kind whatever. I own a small amount of personal property consisting of household goods and furniture, 3 beds and bedding, chairs, dishes, and cooking utensils which were used by my husband and me in keeping house while he was alive and which in all would not in my opinion equal three-hundred dollars in value. This property is generally old and would bring but little if exposed to sale. I also own one old cow worth about $25.00. I own no other personal property than that above stated. I have no income whatever from any source, except my own labor. I have no means of support outside of my own labor. I support myself by doing washing for others. I sometimes do washing for 2 or 3 days in the week and sometimes for five or six days in the week. From this means viz washing by my own hands, I earn my support. This affidavit was written in my presence by George W. Fleeger of Butler, Pa., at his office in Butler, Pa., on the 24th day of November, 1896., from oral statements made by me to him at this time and in making said statements I was not aided or prompted by any written or printed statement or recital prepared or dictated by any other person or persons, but the said statements as above written are according to my personal knowledge, recollection and belief.
