Simeon H Baker
Submitted by William
Baker
Simeon H. Baker of Sparta Township. Longhand writing on
back reads "Uncle Simeon Baker." The "H" may stand for Horace. Born in New York State October 24, 1816, died in Sparta March 21, 1891.
He may have been a son of John and Susan Meach (or Mercale) Baker of
Clarence, NY.
1860 census lists him as a farmer living with wife Ann and son
Jacob, 12 years. Farm was on the County Line Road, next to that of
Jerry Baker, a distant cousin.
His wife Ann died, date unknown, and he remarried to Calista
Stowell, daughter of Oliver and Wealthy Stowell. It was her third marriage, twice
widowed. A Stowell history book states Simeon was a farmer and stone mason. Calista was a sister of
Esther Stowell, Jerry Baker's wife.
Simeon and Calista are buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Spartansburg.
