Elizabeth Patterson Gilfillan Blackburn was eldest daughter of John and Mary Clendenin Patterson, and was born in Cumberland County, PA, in 1793 before the family became pioneer settlers in Lawrence County in 1801. Her first husband was Dr. Alexander Gilfillan. He died in 1815, leaving Elizabeth with one living child, Mariah Alexander Gilfillan Vance.
