Robert E. Thorn
Robert E. Thorn was the Director of Athletics at
Grove City College.
"Robert E. Thorn is a product of our own college graduating in
1916. During his college career he established an enviable records as an
all around athlete and held the unusual distinction of being a four-sport
man. "Bob" played four years of baseball as a catcher and first
baseman and captained the team in 1915. Playing a guard position on the
basketball five, he laid the foundation of his success as coach. His speed
won him a position on the football team of '13 as end, and as quarterback his
work was a large factor in the success of the champion team of '15. he
also won a letter in tennis in 1915. His election as president of the
senior class is indicative of his high rating among his fellow
students. After graduating Thorn was coach in the high schools at
Grove City, Pa., Lima, Ohio, and Franklin, Pa. His success earned him an
appointment as Director of Athletics of the Erie High Schools, which he declined
to come to Grove City. In the years he has been here he has made Grove
City famous as a basketball school and as a Director of Athletics he has been
largely instrumental in her all around success."
