He served as a private in Company I, 59th Regiment, 2nd PA Cavalry during the Civil War and was a prisoner of war at Andersonville for five months. He died 13 May 1913 in Greenwood Township, Crawford County, PA and is buried in Porters Corners Cemetery with his wife, Beulah Williams Coulter.
