Francis Dunn

Among the gentlemen whose life and character entitle them to the respect and esteem of the community, in which they reside, none stand higher than the gentleman whose name heads this sketch.

Francis Dunn was born in Westmoreland county, Pa., November 19th, 1793. His education was received from his father, who was a school-teacher, and he never spent but three months in any educational institution. He was essentially home taught, and the beneficent influences of his thorough training have been among the marked characteristics of his life. When in his eleventh year, his father removed with his family to Sandy Lake borough, then a mere straggling hamlet, and settled on the site now occupied by the heirs of William Porter. He worked on the farm until the summer of 1816, when he permanently located on the place he now occupies, “taking up,” at the time, about 400 acres of land.

In 1818, he married Miss Anna Greer, a native of Crawford county, Pa., who proved an admirable wife and an affectionate mother. They raised a family of seven children, five sons and two daughters, all but one of whom are now living, and he, the eldest son, died in Young America, Illinois, February 17th, 1866. The others are married, except a daughter, who resides with him. Time following is the order of the births of the family: Allen, April 13th, 1821; Margaret M., June 3d, 1823; John G., February 25th, 1826; Nathan G., September 17th, 1828; Elizabeth, April 28th, 1831, married, and resides in Northwood, Logan county, Ohio; Francis, November 7th, 1833; William C., April 3d, 1837.

Mr. Dunn is one of the few survivors of the War of 1812. He promptly answered the special calls of the government, twice during the conflict, and served in Captain Egbert’s company, at Erie, Pa. He is a man of very excellent traits of character; hospitable, courteous, and intelligent, and one who is a faithful and good citizen; an excellent neighbor, and a firm friend to all who need encouragement in the path of duty. He has very liberally assisted his family to positions of independence; and has done all in his power to make them what they are, respectable members of society.

Mr. Dunn is a member of the United Presbyterian Church, to which he has belonged for about sixty-five years. His wife was also a member of the same church, and faithfully followed its teachings up to her death, which occurred on the 20th of February, 1871, in the seventy-seventh year of her age.
