Lewis Francis Brest

Civil War veteran, Lewis Frances Brest received the country's highest honor, the Medal of Honor for his service in the 57th Penna. Volunteer Infantry Regiment.

He was born 15 May 1842 in Mercer County.   After the war ended he returned to Mercer County and married Margaret J. Hummel.  He was a member of the local 'Grand Army of the Republic' (GAR) Post in Mercer.

Lewis Francis Brest died 2 Dec 1915 and is buried in  Citizen's Cemetery, in Mercer.  A Medal of Honor headstone was erected on his grave in 1997.
