If
you have a scanner and can scan the photos into your computer.... or if
you have the photo already scanned in....
First, if you have a scanner
and can scan the photo into your computer, scan the photo at about 150-250
resolution (on resolution: the smaller the people the in the photo
are, the
higher the resolution) and send the photo to me as an email attachment
--
.jpg files usually work the best
(and .gif is pretty much the worst) - but also, I can read .tif, .bmp, .mix, .max, .pdd files. Save the file as one of
the formats mentioned.
If you have a "save for the web" option in your photo editing
program, don't use it.
Often the photos come out really small and fuzzy.
When you go to save the photo, if the program asked you for a quality
setting, tell it high quality or large.
Some photo editing programs will ask, some will not.
If
the photo is large, I can make it smaller. If the photo is
small, the photo is small.
Give
each file a unique name. Doesn't really matter what it is,
just be sure every file isn't called Smith3.jpg or scan.jpg
If you send a file I
can't read or figure out what kind it is, I'll email you back and let you
know.
Attach one
or two photos or a zipped file of photos to the an email and send
them to me. In the email include some information about the
people and place in the picture. And, tell me specifically in which state
or state sections to place the photos. In this virus-happy
time, please don't send a blank email with a file attached.
Type
the information for the photo in to the email - or if you'd like send it
in a word or works file (also attached to the email).
Information.
Include some information about the people and/or place in the
photograph. Tips on information.
Contact.
Be sure to include your name the way you'd like it to appear for the
"submitted by..." line. (Mary Smith Jones, Dr. Fred Jones, etc.)
If you'd like for just your email address to be listed and not your name
- let me know that in the email.
If for some reason, you'd
like to have your name and email not appear (and would like to be anonymous),
spell that out in the email for each photo. Understand, though
that potential "cousins" will not have a way to reach you.
After
I receive the photos, I'll download them and let you know if I have any
questions. If you don't hear from me, everything's fine. A lot
of folks will send one or two photos as a test to see how they came
through (put "let me know how these came through" in the email),
I'll email them back, with any questions or problems, and then they email
more photos.
Suppose
you have a scanner and can scan in the photo, but don't want to email
it....
That's
easy. Use the directions above ... but send the photos to me as files on a
CD. Also, type the copy into a word processing program
(Word, Works, Word Perfect, etc.) and also send it to me on the
disk.
Please,
please don't print the photos on your printer and send them to me.
The file (.jpg .bmp, .tif, etc.) will be at least two times better than
if I rescan the photo that you've printed out, plus it will save a lot
of time.
Then,
drop the disk in the mail to me.
Email
me for my mailing address.
