Col. Richard Petit Roberts

Submitted by Richard G. Temple, Aliquippa, Pa.

Col. Richard Petit Roberts (1820-1863) served as commanding officer of the 140th Pennsylvania Regiment during the American Civil War, from Sept 8, 1862 to July 2, 1863.

He was an attorney from Beaver, Pa., and when the call for volunteers came from President Lincoln in the summer of 1862, Roberts organized three companies from Beaver County, he becoming commanding officer of Co. F, with the rank of Captain.

On Sept 8th, at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg, Pa., the three Beaver County companies, along with seven other western Pennsylvania companies, were formed into the 140th Pennsylvania Regiment, and Capt. Roberts was elected to serve as its commanding officer with the elevated rank of colonel.

On July 2, 1863, while leading his regiment at the Battle of the Wheatfield at Gettysburg, Pa., Col. Roberts was killed. His body was returned home and today rest in the Beaver Cemetery.
