William F. Huber Safety Patrolman at West Mifflin School

The safety patrol helping the student across the Bethel Church Road, now Old
Lebanon Church Road was the submitter's father, William F. Huber. His sister
Kate is the young lady behind Howard Schwidt, the boy on crutches. Kate Gamble still lives in the
Pittsburgh area about 5 miles from where this photo was taken. William lived to
the age of 82 and died in 2002. This article appeared in the Post Gazette
newspaper.
West Mifflin school was located south of Pittsburgh in West Mifflin boro. The
large hill in the background of the photo is the old slag dump from the local
steel mills. If was very large and a train carrying slag circled it on the top
and dumped hot liquid slag over the sides The school was located on the main
road and not far from the current Allegheny County airport.
William F. Huber was born and raised in the Pittsburgh area, working for USS
at the Irwin Works. A number of family members still live in the south hills
area of Pittsburgh.
