Rev. Nicholas Howell Holmes

Rev. Nicholas Howell Holmes, D.D, was born in Denmark, Dec 29, 1841, and came to America in 1858 locating in Chautauqua Co., NY. He served with the NY Sharpshooters during the Civil War, was imprisoned at Libby, Belle Isle and Salisbury prisons and was with the army of General Grant when Lee surrendered at Appomattox.

He graduated from Allegheny College and became licensed member of the Erie Conference in 1879.  Conneautville was his first charge. He later pastored at Chagrin Falls, North East, Franklin, New Castle, Pittsburgh and other cities. 

Rev. Holmes married Effie Angeline Gleason, daughter of William Brown Gleason and Caroline Dewey Stone Gleason, in 1873.  She died in 1902. He remarried to Mrs.
Lillian Crawford of New Castle.

Rev.Holmes died in Dec 1915 in Washington, DC.  He is buried in Conneautville Cemetery.
