The DeForest Family

Sometime after the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, my Grandmother (Magdeline Szymanowski/Rejent) and Grandmother (Mary Jablonski/Szymanowski) were maids for the DeForest family living on Scottwood Avenue. Grandma told me Mrs. DeForest played the organ in Collingwood Presbyterian church (she did not believe in playing cards on Sunday).

My Grandmother and Great Grandmother witnessed the installation of the first experimental audio equipment for the first radio broadcast EVER (that took place downtown at the Ohio Bank Building) in the dining room of the DeForest home.

Grandma said Mr. DeForest strung proportionately spaced wires along the floor, up one wall, across the ceiling, down the opposite wall and to the floor again. She and her Mother got an exemption from Mrs. DeForest from cleaning the dining room.

I was very small when my family and I drove with Grandma on Scottwood Avenue where she showed me the house. I don't know/remember the address. Is the address listed somewhere in the archives of Collingwood Presbyterian church? I tried looking it up in the Toledo City Directory: there was no listing at all.

Thank You
