More Dating

According to "Directory of Pennsylvania Photographers, 1839-1900" by Linda A. Ries and Jay W. Ruby, James R. Pearson was active in Pittsburg 1890-91.

From the style of their Little Lord Fauntleroy suits, I would guess this is from the late 1880s or 1890s. If the photo and cardboard have a yellowish tint, it is probably from the late 1880s or earlier in the 1890s. See "Camera Clues" by Joe Nickell for dating photos by physical characteristics. Not just from this book, but also from my personal experience, the general style of this photo seems to be earlier, closer to the late 1880s, and almost certainly before the late 1890s.
