Stauffer Family Bible

Stauffer Family Bible

A page from the Stauffer Family Bible showing the birth of Thomas Fleming Stauffer, oldest son of John Stauffer and Eleanor Sowash Stauffer. The page stops before the birth of the younger children, including John Herman, born 1856. All births were in a log cabin in Dry Ridge, Westmoreland Co, PA.

Searching for old family bible with Stauffer, Hanna, and Plonk

My grandmother (Sarah Loretta Hanna Walraven) was given a bible by her mother who was a Stauffer in the early 1900s. Loretta gave the bible (brown leather in English) to my mother in the 1950s, but removed the bible from my family's home in North East Atlanta and disposed of the bible in the Atlanta or Decatur area of Georgia. This bible had a section listing genealogical information to include births, deaths, marriages, etc.. I once used the bible to copy information to create a brief family tree to include my parent's family and grandparents for a school project. Ironically, the information I copied was likely written by Loretta and was not accurate as apparently Loretta made up entries on her Hanna family side. Through my research, I was able to precisely identify the extent of the errors but not the reason they were made up. It appears that details related to my mother's 1907 birth may have been the reason as my mother was listed in historical documents as "Rachel Gale" and as a "step daughter" to Isaac Frances Walraven who was listed as her birth father on a Pennsylvania birth certificate. My mother never knew exactly where she was born in Pennsylvania. Loretta's family lived in Westmoreland Co and areas near the Ohio and Pennsylvania border near Pittsburg and Erie.
