McDonald House

McDonald House

McDonald House built by John McDonald abt 1760 located on land he obtained from the Shawnee who had a camp nearby. John McDonald's wife may have been Shawnee. The bricks used to construct the house were made by hand by John McDonald. The original spring still supplies water for the house.

The house is located on the road between Rillton and Guffey in Sewickley Twp, Westmoreland Co., PA and is still inhabited. It passed from the McDonald Family to their relatives the McGrews and eventually out of the family.

The first house built by John McDonald about 1754 was a single room log structure located further down the road to Guffey. Several additions were later made to this house and the entire structure was sided. It was destroyed by a tornado in the 1950s.

McDonald House History

I am very interested in the history of John McDonald house. My grandmother was a Wiley and I have researched the Wiley family for some time. John McDonald born 1798 married Elizabeth Wiley b 1802 (dau of Sampson & Ann (McGrew) Wiley). John died in the 1840's and Elizabeth died in 1854. I have been past this house several times and I knew about the handmade bricks, but the dates don't work. I do not know who John McDonald's parents are, but one family researcher told me it was Alexander McDonald. In that vein, Alexander McDonald Wiley is my gr gr grandfather. If you would be willing to share the source of your information and any information you may have on John McDonald lineage I would be grateful.
Sincerely, Ardith

Hello, Ardith,
Sorry for the tardy reply. I visit this site rarely.

I, too am a descendant of Sampson and Ann (McGrew) Wiley through their daughter, Elizabeth (Wiley)McDonald so that makes us cousins!
To answer your question, Alexander McDonald and wife, Livia Jane Watson were parents of the John McDonald who married Elizabeth Wiley. Alexander McDonald's father was another John McDonald whose
wife may have been named Eleanor. His father was a William McDonald. Their is possible Shawnee ancestry somewhere in this line which is supported by DNA evidence but not sure if it is from the McDonalds or the allied families of McGrew, Reed,Wilson, Dutton,or Watson. Sampson Wiley emigrated from Co. Tyrone, NIR

I would love to hear what you have learned about the Wiley's. I'd also like to contact living descendants of the
McDonald, Reed, Jarvis, Wilson, Watson, Fisher, Lightburn, and Dutton families of Westmoreland Co., PA and Morgan/Washington Cos., OH.

Hope you get this message! Please contact me by email.

All the best,
