Lighthouse, Port Bolivar, Texas

Lighthouse, Port Bolivar, Texas

Photo from an early 1900s postcard

Should be Port Bolivar, Tx (on mainland east of Galveston Island

Caption says Port O'Connor, Tx but this is the old Lighthouse located at Port Bolivar, Tx. It is just east of Galveston Island across a ferry ride to the mainland on Hwy 87. The Lighthouse is abt 1/2 from the ferry landing. It stood mostly intact until Hurricane Ike hit the Bolivar Peninsula Sept 13, 2008 with sustained winds of 110mph and a 22 ft storm surge. 37 confirmed deaths and hundreds still missing today. Built in 1872 and retired in 1933 when replaced by the south jetty light. It is now privately owned and not open to the public.
