John Robert "Bob" Savage was born Dec 1, 1921 in Manchester, New Hampshire. Bob entered Staunton Military Academy, Staunton, VA, in Sept 1939. This photo of Bob Savage was taken for the 1942 Shrapnel Yearbook for Staunton Military Academy.
Bob's Major League career started on June 24, 1942 when he signed with the Philadelphia Athletics (A's) Baseball Team.
The 1942 Shrapnel wrote the following about Bob Savage:
"Staunton Military Acedemy supporters again salute Robert Savage, its unparaleled mound ace. Within the last two decades no one has attracted as much attention as Bob Savage. Bob's fine performance has drawn many college and major league scouts to every game to see his remarkable pitching.
Young Bob Savage has a swell record for all last year and so far this season. By pitching a no-hit and no-run game against the University of Virginia Freshmen, Bob has remained the same superbly poised, unperturbable individual whom everyone likes and whose play everyone admires.
After this season closes, we all wish you continued success on the diamond wherever you may go."
